Governors' Annual Statement

September 2016 - July 2017

As always, the year was a busy one for the governors.  Besides our usual round of committee and governing body meetings, we visited the school regularly to see the children and staff.  At Christmas we said goodbye and good luck to our Headteacher, Ms Sue Sutton, as she left us to take up a new challenge in Cambridge.  Interviews for a new Headteacher were held early in the Summer Term, and we were delighted to be able to appoint Miss Deborah Watson to start in September.  The most notable change on the premises was the installation of some superb new climbing equipment in the garden at the back of the school.  It formed part of our plan to improve the outside space over time and was chosen specifically to develop the important physical skills of all our children.

Our role:  Governors work with the Headteacher and staff to ensure that the quality of teaching and learning at Tanglewood continues to improve, so that all the children in our care make the best possible progress in the short time they are with us.  We are also responsible for ensuring that the school's finances are kept on an even keel, that appropriate controls are in place around expenditure, and that the premises are maintained and developed in the best interests of the school.

Membership:  This year we said goodbye to one governor, Chris Harland, whose term of office came to an end.  Many thanks to him for his hard work and dedication during his two years with us.  This left us with two vacancies, but fortunately we were able to appoint two new Parent Governors in the Spring Term - Mrs Hannah Elgie and Mrs Susie Starling.  We hope they enjoy working with us.

Achievements this year:

·         Governors' visits are now closely linked to individual roles and responsibilities.  In addition, they are focussed on collecting evidence of progress of items on the School Improvement Plan, which are then passed to the relevant committees or groups.

·         Our system of policy review is now very efficient, thanks to improvements made over the last couple of years.

·         Governors now regularly challenge the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) on the use of funds and the children's progress.  The School Improvement Group in particular works very closely with the SLT to look at data for the children, set targets for progress over the year and ask challenging questions about termly progress towards those targets.

Areas for improvement 2017-18:

  • Progress - School Improvement Group to continue to challenge the SLT over the progress made by our children, with an emphasis on specific areas such as English and Mathematics, and the progress made by particular groups of children.
  • Early Years Pupil Premium - much closer monitoring of this to understand how the money is used and assess whether it is having the impact required.
  • Skills and knowledge - to embark on a series of training sessions to plug the gaps identified in our Skills Audit carried out in the Summer Term.
